Digital Photography Technique

By Darren Rivers

With the popularity of digital cameras, amateur and professional photographers have had to adapt by developing a new technique. This article explores some ideas for developing your digital photography technique.

One of the best advantages of digital photography is the fact that it is now free to take a picture. You can take a picture and immediately see the results on your LCD screen. There is no film cost or development cost. With this comes the development of the digital photography technique of taking several pictures. With this technique, you can shoot a picture several times to make sure you captured exactly what you wanted.

While you're shooting multiple pictures, vary the settings on your camera for different effects. With this digital photography technique, you can create really artistic pictures (sometimes by accident), by varying the ISO, aperture, and shutter speed of your camera. Many cameras also have built in pre-configured settings (B&W mode, Sepia mode, landscape mode, etc.). With digital photography, you can use this technique to use these settings (even in shots that they aren't intended for) to get unique results.

Check out the many resources available on digital photography tips. There is so much information available.

One of the most common complaints with digital photography is the longer focus time required compared to traditional film cameras. Sometimes this delayed focus causes you to miss a shot. With the pre-focus technique, the focus time problem becomes obsolete. In this digital photography technique you point your camera at what you want to take a picture of, depress the button half-way down and wait for the focus lock. Then, when you are ready to take your picture, just depress the button all the way down and the camera will capture the picture immediately. This technique is invaluable when you want to snap a picture of your child with just the right expression. I've used this technique for years with my children.

While your camera's LCD screen is great for framing your picture before you shoot, it has its limitations. Sometimes the LCD screen can be difficult to see in bright sunlight. Thankfully, many digital photography cameras still come equipped with an optical viewfinder. In this technique, use the optical viewfinder in situations when the LCD is unusable. If you don't have an optical viewfinder and you can't use your LCD, refer to the first digital photography technique: shoot multiple shots. One of them is bound to be good!
